Call of the Snow Lion

A documentary series revealing a history of the unsettled Tibetan Diaspora

Now available on DVD from Tibet Foundation

In 1949, the Chinese People's Liberation Army marched into the Kham region of east Tibet creating unprecedented upheaval which, in 1959, resulted in thousands of Tibetans moving into exile in India, Nepal and beyond.

Sixty years later in 2010, we looked back into the reality of the history of the unsettled Tibetan Diaspora, their expectations, hopes and vision for the future.

From 13th November 2010, we were on a journey across India with a chosen witness of the past and present events – born in Tibet, he has been a monk, a freedom fighter, a diplomat, The Dalai Lama’s representative and a member of parliament before founding a unique charity that has successfully been working for the past 25 years both inside Tibet and in exile.

Beyond what we heard and what we were told, we looked into the daily life of individuals – young and old, monks and nuns, students and teachers, artists and musicians, ordinary people and officials, and many others including professionals writers and filmmakers.

Through this film we could get a glimpse of this thrilling and mysterious community and uncover the complexity between tantric Buddhism and modern life, theocracy and democracy, and resignation and determination.

On every 4th or 5th day of the journey, we broadcasted on the Internet the footage of what we have seen. Now Call of the Snow Lion - Documentary series – 8 X 13 minutes is available on a double DVD PAL priced at £14.50 plus £2.50 for post and packing.
Funding the publication of work by HH the Dalai Lama

His Holiness the Dalai Lama has visited Mongolia several times since 1990, most recently in November 2002, each time drawing huge crowds of devotees. Many Mongolians are eager to read the Dalai Lama's teachings, and the Programme has funded the production of several books in Mongolian by and about the Dalai Lama. These include:

Freedom in Exile: A biography of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, 2002, translated by Dr. Chuluunbaatar of the Buddhist Research Centre, Mongolia National University

A Biography of the Dalai Lama, 2002, by two journalists using mainly Russian sources with some material provided by Tibet Foundation.

Tibetan Peace Garden - Samten Kyil

In May 1999, His Holiness the Dalai Lama opened and consecrated the Tibetan Peace Garden next to the Imperial War Museum, London, UK. The Peace Garden was commissioned by Tibet Foundation and built on land kindly provided by Southwark Council. It has been donated to the people of Britain for all to enjoy.

The Tibetan Peace Garden honours one of the principal teachings of His Holiness - the need to create understanding between different cultures and to establish places of peace and harmony in the world. It is hoped that it will create a deepening awareness of His Holiness’s thoughts and words.

At the same time the Garden also serves to create a greater awareness of Buddhist culture. At its heart is the Kalachakra Mandala associated with world peace. Merely to gaze on this Mandala is said to confer something of its blessing and power to transform, and here, cast for the first time in bronze, it rests as the central focus for the garden.

The contemporary western sculptures (which are set on a north, south, east, west axis) representing the four elements Air, Fire, Earth & Water and the language pillar with its carving in four languages of a message for the millennium by His Holiness The Dalai Lama, form a symbol of the harmony that can be created between different people and cultures.

Around the Mandala are 8 meditation seats which represent the noble eightfold path; right view, thought, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness and concentration.

The garden also stands as a monument to the courage of the Tibetan people and their patient commitment to the path of non-violence and peace. It will remind us too that Tibet's culture is a treasure of our common heritage, and how vital it is that it be kept alive.

The inner gardens are planted with herbs and plants from Tibet and the Himalayan regions, while the pergola is covered with climbing plants, including jasmine, honeysuckle and scented roses. The surrounding area is landscaped and planted with trees in a collaborative venture that involved the Borough of Southwark and the local community.

The Tibetan Peace Garden has a unique location. The park in which it is built houses The Imperial War Museum and so attracts large numbers of visitors from all over the UK and abroad. It is within walking distance of Waterloo Station and is close to the Houses of Parliament, Lambeth Palace, the London Eye, the South Bank Centre and Tate Modern.

Simply and yet perhaps most deeply, Samten Kyil means Garden of Contemplation and is a place where anyone can come and enjoy a time of peace and tranquillity. For the spiritually minded, this is no longer an ordinary place, because it has been both consecrated and blessed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama to have a spiritual life of its own.

In a very practical sense by offering this garden, we hope that it will encourage people to become aware of Tibet Foundation's activities and so enable us to achieve more with our existing programmes, and to initiate new ones. Anyone who knows the plight of Tibet and her people will know how much there is to do.

Reminder, symbol, sanctuary, offering, zone of peace and inner content, or simply just a garden - it is our aspiration that you enjoy the Tibetan Peace Garden and find in it a place of inspiration and delight.
The Language Pillar

Near to the Garden’s entrance, is a stone pillar known as the Language Pillar. Carved into each side of this pillar is a special message from His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Tibetan, English, Chinese and Hindi. The pillar design is based on the Sho Pillar, a 9th century treaty stone in Lhasa acknowledging the rights of both Tibet and China to co exist in peace. The three carved steps at the top of the pillar represent peace understanding and love.

The message reads:

FROM HIS HOLINESS THE 14th DALAI LAMA

"We human beings are passing through a crucial period in our development.

Conflicts and mistrust have plagued the past century, which has brought immeasurable human suffering and environmental destruction. It is in the interests of all of us on this planet that we make a joint effort to turn the next century into an era of peace and harmony.

May this peace garden become a monument to the courage of the Tibetan people and their commitment to peace.

May it remain as a symbol to remind us that human survival depends on living in harmony and always choosing the path of non-violence in resolving our differences."

The Construction Team

The Tibet Foundation, under the guidance of the Venerable Duboom Tulku, worked with both Namygal Monastery and Gyurme Tantric College India in the adapting of the Kalachakra Mandala for the project. It was then carved in plaster at a London studio by Tim Metcalfe, assisted by Tibetan Awang Dorjee before being cast in bronze at the Nautilus Foundry, Essex.

The Artists

The Sculptor

Hamish Horsley, the designer and sculptor of the Tibetan Peace Garden, has collaborated with a range of skilled professionals. Since his graduation from the Royal College of Art in 1985, he has completed many large scale public art projects. The Peace Garden, he believes, is his biggest and most significant project.

His extensive travels through Tibet and India, along with time spent in consultation with Tibetan experts, has given him the insight to create a piece of work which reflects the principles of Tibetan Buddhism and culture.

The Stonemason

Born into a nomadic family in Tibet, Awang Dorjee, the Tibetan stonemason, learned his carving skills from prominent Tibetan stone carvers at a very young age. Following his escape into India in 1990, he has done several significant carvings of various Tibetan Buddhist icons and sacred texts, receiving wide acclaim for his works.

Awang was chosen from among 20 applicants by the Dalai Lama's Department of Education in north India. He has given valuable assistance in the stonework of the Tibetan Peace Garden.

Tibetan medicine

Traditional Tibetan Medicine is a unique and holistic medical system. Treatment includes the prescription of herbal pills prepared according to traditional medical texts, and modifications to the patient's diet and behaviour.

The effectiveness of Tibetan Medicine has been demonstrated in its simple treatment of complex long-term conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes, jaundice, and certain forms of cancer.

Tibetan Medicine is actively practiced in the Tibetan communities in Tibet and overseas. In India the Dharamsala based Tibetan Astrological and Medical Institute (TAMI) works to maintain the traditions of Tibetan Medicine by training doctors, and producing the necessary pills for its 42 branch clinics in India and Nepal

As part of its Art and Culture programme, Tibet Foundation brings a Tibetan Doctor to the UK approximately quarterly to give talks on Tibetan Medicine and private consultations.

Origins

Tibetan medicine is over 2,000 years old and said to originate from medical teaching given by the Buddha around 500 BC. It is based on the religious and medical traditions of Bon and Tibetan Buddhism but also incorporated medical ideas from Greece, Persia, India and China. In the 18th century it was formalised in four great medical texts, the Four Tantras (the rGyud-bzhi - pronounced 'gyu-zhee'). These comprise 156 chapters and 5,900 verses on concepts and causes of disease, diagnosis and treatment and are still used for medical teaching today.

The guardian deity of Tibetan medicine is the Medicine Buddha who is often symbolically depicted with a bowl of long-life elixir and a myrobalam fruit - a potent medicinal plant said to cure all diseases.
Concepts of the body

Three 'humours' are said to make up the physical body and regulate physical and mental processes. Each has particular qualities and functions:

Loong (vital energy or 'wind') is light, moving, and dry and influences respiration, thinking, digestion, reproduction, physical movement and vitality.

Tripa (body heat or 'bile') is hot, oily and odorous and influences appetite, thirst, digestive function, skin quality, joint lubrication, vision and tempestuousness.

Peken (moisture and fluids or 'phlegm') is cold, heavy and sticky in nature and regulates sleep, joint mobility, digestion, excretion and mental alertness.

When the humours are balanced there is good health. However imbalance can be caused by lifestyle factors, unhealthy diet, negative thoughts, environmental factors and spirit influences, leading to disease.

At the root of all diseases are three mental 'poisons': desire, hatred and confusion. Desire (characterised by attachment, greed, pride and cravings) disturbs 'wind'. Hatred (including anger, aggression and aversion) disturbs 'bile'. Confusion (characterised by indecision, mental lethargy and listlessness) affects 'phlegm'.

Tibetan Medicine classifies 84,000 types of diseases divided into four main types: due to early life, present lifestyle, past life (karma) and spirit influence.

Diagnosis & treatment

Diagnosis is based on pulse taking, urine analysis, observation (of tongue, skin, eyes, ears, gait etc) and questioning. The best Tibetan doctors are said to be able to diagnose using pulse alone. Pulses for each internal organ are taken on the radial arteries of the wrists and there are also seven 'wondrous' pulses for determining pregnancy and spirit influences. Astrological charts may also be used to determine predisposition to disease and underlying cause.

The aim is to restore the balance of the humours. This is achieved through dietary modification, behavioural change, medicines, external treatments, religious rituals and purification techniques.

Diet and lifestyle changes are always recommended and are based on the effects of different types of food and behaviour on each humour. Medicines are herbal, made from the roots, leaves, flowers, bark and fruits of different plants, minerals and occasionally animal products. The remedies are given as pills, powders, decoctions and ointments. External therapies include moxibustion (a form of heat treatment), massage and bone-setting. Spiritual healing involves prayers and rituals by the physician and/or the patient and often the healing power of the Medicine Buddha is invoked.

What is it good for?

Tibetan medicine is widely used in the East and increasingly in the West to treat a wide range of disorders. Research has shown that certain formulas are particularly effective for digestive and circulation problems.
