Gandan Monastery

Gandan Monastery was the first organisation we worked with in 1993. The Monastery was founded in 1838 as the religious centre of Buddhism in Mongolia and remains the country's largest monastic institute. Gandan was the only monastery to survive the purges against what the Communists called the "former backwardness" of Mongolia.

Pethub Stangey Choinkhorling Monastery and Monastic School

Pethub Stangey Choinkhorling Monastery and Monastic School have also been receiving funds from Tibet Foundation since the beginning of the Buddhism in Mongolia programme. The Monastery and School were both built by the late Kushok Bakula Rinpoche, who played a significant role in the revival of Buddhism in the 1990s, during his ten year tenure as Indian Ambassador to Mongolia. Pethub Monastery, an important centre of learning for Mongolian Buddhists, is the only fully residential monastery in Mongolia at the present time.
